Many plant species are threatened with extinction through human activity. Ethiopia has over 6500 flowering plants and ferns, but is poorly equipped to monitor and evaluate this heritage. The National Herbarium (ETH) believes that establishing, expending, and improving herbaria is the first and most important step towards achieving this objectives.
Herbarium is a collection of dried plants or specimens of plants, that are systematically arranged, usually either geographically or alphabetically, for reference. In a herbarium, plants that cannot be kept in the fresh state are preserved to serve as a reference collection
for botanical comparison and research. Plant specimens are pressed and dried between sheets of smooth, heavy paper by means of adhesive glues. Loose bits of plant material, such as fruits and seeds, are placed in an envelope attached to the herbarium sheet. Each sheet is carefully labeled with the name of the plant and its habitat, the date and place of collection, the name of the collector, and other pertinent information. Herbarium Essentials is an illustrated manual for herbarium workers, supplying the basic information about a functional herbarium. It provides a theoretical background, as we as comprehensive methods for running a herbarium, taking its different aspects into account.
These aspects include plant collecting, mounting, scientific and physical curation, as well as computerization. The combination of theory and practical expertise will equip you with the essential knowledge required to work in and run a herbarium. It is an important source of data used by researchers in many plant-related sciences and is most often used for taxonomic research …….
