10 Rules for Smart and Safe Play

The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported an estimated 251,800 toy-related emergency department visits in 2014. Meaning, while toy recalls continue to decrease, your child’s toys can still present a health and safety risk – be it minor scrapes, cuts and bruises or something more serious like choking.

Whether you’re shopping for a niece or nephew or monitoring the presents your child receives, you should perform a few fundamental checks. Look at the labeling, which can guide you to the most appropriate age and developmental stage as well as provide inspection approval from the American Society for Testing and Materials. Check the materials and accessories or trimmings – small, detachable parts or long ropes and strings can be of concern depending on your child’s age.

Most important of all, keep an eye on your child’s toys the more they play with them. You’ll want to be aware of any broken parts – which could result in sharpness or splinters – and any potentially hazardous wear and tear.

While you can take comfort in knowing that 96 percent of emergency department visits for toy-related injuries are treated and released, a little extra diligence never hurt.
