Elderberry – The Most Antiviral Fruit Known to People
Now that we are in the peak of cold and flu season, many people will find themselves taking prescription drugs to fight off illnesses. The problem is that many of these manufactured drugs don’t treat the illness, they only mask the symptoms.
Viruses replicate within the body when the body’s immune system is too weak to fight them off. The real key to fighting off viral infections is to strengthen the entire immune system. That’s where elderberries come in.
Elderberries contain organic pigments, tannin, amino acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, sugar, rutin, viburnic acid, vitamin A and B, and a large amount of vitamin C. They are also mildly laxative, a diuretic, and diaphoretic. Flavonoids, including quercetin, and according to studies, these flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage. These strong antioxidant properties have been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat colds, the flu, wounds (topically), and even herpes.
In 2001, the US National Library of Medicine published a study, stating that elderberry extracts are “natural remedies with antiviral properties, especially against different strains of influenza virus.” In 2004, NLM published another study which showed that elderberries reduce the duration of flu symptoms: “Symptoms were relieved on average four days earlier and use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving elderberry extract compared with placebo.” The University of Maryland Medical Center wrote “Elderberry may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer properties” and “one study suggested that elderberry could kill the H1N1 virus.” The current flu vaccination can’t even claim to kill H1N1.
So what makes the elderberries so effective? It’s actually a little bit of a mystery to modern science, but what is know is that there is a special compound in elderberries that coat viruses and keep them from penetrating healthy cells. Modern science has yet to figure out how, but it’s safe to assume that some of nature’s mysteries aren’t meant to be figured out.
So, the next time you feel a cold coming on, give your body the tools it needs to fight it off. You won’t find the answer in a pharmacy, but you will find it in a nice elderberry elixir.
