While learned behaviour of Orcas might be fun and spectacular at an aquarium, it is even more impressive in the wild. Here is a clip from the ‘Frozen Planet’ documentary showing just one example of the ingenuity and team-work shown by orcas when hunting their prey.
Weddell seals often escape predators by resting upon ice floes. However, working in a small pod, the orcas are able to produce large waves by diving in front of small ice floes- knocking the seal into the water. A combination of ‘tail-swiping’ and blowing bubbles confuses and weakens the seal, before the orcas are able to move in and make the kill.
