‘I THINK it would be marvellous,’ Peta Cartwright declared enthusiastically, accepting a cigarette from the pack she was being offered by her neighbour. She did not often smoke, but thought it contributed to the boyish image she cultivated whenshe was with her fellow students. The youth sitting next to her, Keith Morris, struck a match to light it for her and she accepted the service reluctantly, suspecting a tribute to her sex. Peta was all for women’s rights and
equality and disdained such small courtesies.
‘Of course my parents won’t like it,’ she went on thoughtfully. ‘Poor dears, they still haven’t quite eliminated the picture of a homey daughter that they’ve cherished ever since I was born, but we’re as we’re made and I can’t stick domesticity. I’ve always been a tomboy.’
‘Well, you’re over eighteen,’ Keith reminded her, ‘so they can’t do anything to stop you. Your dad ought to sympathise,by all accounts he was full of adventurous spirit in his younger days.’
For Timothy Cartwright had been an explorer and archaeologist, until illness curtailed his activities, and he was well advanced in middle life when he settled down to matrimony and the writing of books about the adventures in which he could no longer participate.
